I’ve commented earlier today that politicians usually seem to be trying to solve the last set of economic problems rather than the next set. In this sense a bit like those generals always ready to fight the last war, not the next one. Sometimes of course it’s even worse than that with the politicians promising to solve something that’s not actually a problem. And so it is that economists look at Donald Trump and Bernie Sanders snarling about how they’re going to bring manufacturing back to the Good Old USA and wonder. The problem here is that manufacturing never left the US. So how we can bring back something that hasn’t gone is a tad puzzling.
