Beyond Coastal Receives Top EWG Ratings

Jul 14, 2015

Salt Lake City, Utah – July 9, 2015 – The Environmental Working Group (EWG), the independent non-profit consumer resource group that rates protection levels and ingredient safety of sunscreens, recently released their 9th annual 2015 Guide to Sunscreens with leading skin care producer, Beyond Coastal, being one of only two sunscreen brands to receive top ratings in both mineral and non-mineral formulas. This year the EWG tested the ingredients in over 1,700 sunscreens and lip balm products.

Beyond Coastal’s broad spectrum protecting formulas are distinguished by their 80% antioxidant-rich inactive ingredients - grape seed extract, jojoba oil, green tea leaf extract, shea butter and coconut oil to name a few – which work to protect, nourish, repair and hydrate the skin. Since its launch into the outdoor market in 2006, Beyond Coastal’s line of oxybenzone-free and paraben-free sunscreens and lip balms has grown in popularity among both mountain and ocean loving outdoor enthusiasts – the brand offers 80 minute water resistance formulas.

“We are very proud to be one of two sunscreen brands to receive top ratings in both mineral and non-mineral categories from the EWG again this year,” said Tom Ferries, Director of Marketing at Beyond Coastal Sun Care. “With the rates of deadly forms of skin cancer continuing to spread we are committed to supporting the EWG’s consistent efforts to educate the public on sunscreen marketing and formula ingredients as well as our consumers on the dangerous effects of sun exposure. Being able to accommodate all sunscreen users with our natural and active formulas has been a high priority and we look forward to continuing the growth of our line.”

This year the EWG rated all of Beyond Coastal’s active non-mineral sunscreen formulas – Active SPF 34, Active SPF 16 and Active FaceStick SPF 30 – in the best 0-2 “low hazard” range, a distinction gained by only three out of 615 non-mineral sunscreens tested. Toxicity ratings of each ingredient range on a scale from 0-10, with a lower rating indicating a relatively safer product. There were 1,045 non-mineral SPF products tested by the EWG as part of the 2015 guide.

Also rated in the “low hazard” range by the EWG, Beyond Coastal’s 100% natural mineral Lip and Face Screen features a physical block using a premium blend of zinc oxide and titanium dioxide to deliver a clean and clear sun screen. The brand’s entire natural sunscreen line consists of a zinc oxide formula base providing a physical sun block to shelter skin from UVA and UVB rays.

Beyond Coastal’s popular SPF 15 lip balm line was the stand-alone top scorer in the non-mineral lip balm category, repeating its “Best Non-Mineral Lip Balm as Tested by the EWG” title. The moisturizing 11 ingredient formula features broad spectrum UVA/VUB protection against 93% of UVB rays and comes in four natural flavors – Cirtus Grove, Mint Leaf, Vanilla Bean and Cherry Blossom.

In preparation for the summer months and to accommodate large groups and families, Beyond Coastal this month launched their new 8 oz. Airless Pump bottle which dispenses every last drop of its Active SPF 34 and Natural SPF 30 sunscreen formula without any aerosols.

“There’s no more scraping the inside of your sunscreen tube when you hit the road and travel this summer,” said Nick Clark, Creative Director at Beyond Coastal. “The new pump bottle is much healthier than spray bottles that use aerosols and cause sunscreens to evaporate before hitting the skin. It also dispenses every last drop of formula from its container.”
